Who are We?
We are the Guild of One Name Studies (GOONS) registered Taplen to Tupling one-name-study, covering any 2 syllable variant of T*pl* [which usually ends in 'n', but not always], where * represents one or more letters but always 1 syllable. Click here for a list of the variants we have found, or which we would include if found.
In 1999 we combined Anne's GOONS registered Tupling ONS and Elizabeth's southern Taplin ONS, as we had both found the name changed when the owner moved around the country. To avoid too much overlap Elizabeth basically runs the southern half, where they were mostly Taplin, while Anne runs the northern half, where they were usually Tuplin(g), but there are anomalies - it would be daft to split a known family between us, just because they moved. If you contact the wrong one we will transfer you, so you can email either of us; you will be answered by whoever is better able to help you. The largest concentrations were the Taplins of Hampshire and the Tuplings of Lincolnshire, but there were some in almost every county at some time. Some lines are back to the 16th century, a few are barely back to 1900, while many lines get confused between 1750 and 1800 because there were so many couples of similar names in adjoining parishes, with no census to sort "t' other from which".
We also welcome information from family historians for whom T*pl* is so far to the fringe of their tree that they do not actually want to join us; a few such have contacted us from time to time. For example, a descendant of a 19th century T*pl* widows 2nd husbands brother - complicated enough? Could still provide very valuable information. Where we can, we would tell you a little more about them as a thank you for your information.
There are lots of advantages to joining us, and no-one has told us of any disadvantages, so what have you got to lose? Browse around these pages as long as you like: we hope you will get ideas.
