So, How do you spell it?

I’ve also ignored all the variants of T*plis, thinking the s ending was too different to be ours, but then I found the published series of indexes to PCC administrations in the reference library and 'Tapleise John, Depney, Hartley Wintney, S’hants 1659' just shouted at me.

I know there were Taplin in Hartley Wintney a generation or two later, that John was a much-used name in that family, and that Hartley Wintney was not such a huge village, I think the co-incidence is just too great to ignore, so he’s now on my To Do list for my next visit to the National Archives at Kew.

So, if you’re searching an index start with the most frequent spellings, please, in case you get fed up with it; then send us a copy of your findings or lack of them! ‘Nil’ results are just as important to send, they could save someone else time which could be better spent on another source. Don’t forget to note the full source reference, so you won’t waste time checking it again.

Our members send us their research results to be added to the index and, in return, we tell them if another researcher finds someone we think may be theirs: just another benefit of membership.

New records are being added all the time, so it’s also worth telling us occasionally how your research is progressing, or where it’s stuck; you might be lucky, so surely it’s worth a letter or email now and again?
