Don't be confined to my list, use your imagination and your intuition: sometimes you will find a name that is not on the list but is in the right place at a date you would like to be right just because you transcribe it does not mean you have to add them to your family.

At least you will know someone was there then, you can decide later whether it was a spelling mistake or another person.

So, to summarise:

1. The basics are Taplen, Taplin, Tepl* [rare], Tipl*, Topl*, Tupl*; * usually ending -en, -in, -ing, -yn, -yng. Sometimes ending just -ey or y, particularly in records before 1850 or thereabouts, unless you know your family still sometimes used it after that.

2. Then there's the *ppl* version of everything.

3. The *plaine, *pleyn and variants thereof are usually only found in older records, but could have hung on.

4. Anyone you think might be called T*pl* in other circumstances is worth including: get someone to say it with something in their mouth, holding their nose, crying, mumbling, etc., and write what you hear. Some burial records have some weird spellings...

5. In case the l of pl was so soft or slurred it would not be heard I also note the presence of Tappen, Tapping, Tippen, Tipping, Toppen, Topping, Tuppen, and Tupping in registers, even if I do not record them.

6. Then watch out for the simple errors and poor handwriting that can happen when the writer is under pressure, such as leaving n looking like r ; when this is transcribed it can lead to further misunderstandings.

At least if you've included every variant you can think of, you know they should be in there somewhere, even if it was mis-pronounced, mis-heard or mis-spelt...
